Opinion: The pursuit of wealth and the downfall it causes.

Image
In the Great Gatsby, we see Jay Gatsby’s ascent to power, wealth and status, outlined in Chapter 6. The skills that he learnt from Dan Cody, were invaluable, but with no money, Gatsby, or James Gatz had not starting point. It is when he meets Daisy, and they are separated by class, and Daisy’s marriage, that he gains a sense of determination. I believe that this determination is what causes his downfall. Gatsby’s rise to power is aided by Meyer Wolfsheim’s bootlegging industry. I personally found that to be in stark contrast to Gatsby and his nature. Gatsby seems cultured, and a man of ‘fine breeding’, as Meyer Wolfsheim describes him. However, we can see Gatsby’s inner passions come to light as he spends more time with Daisy.  Gatsby may have pursued his wealth, and  got it, we can see that he failed in his ultimate goal: getting Daisy. We can see Gatsby’s carefully constructed mask unravel as he goes from a generally stoic personality, to a man of passion, as he exclaims/yells at T

Opinion: To vote or not to vote? That is the question

Now, I'm sure that we've all seen the ads related to the midterm elections. Whether that be Tudor Dixon hurting Michigan women or Prop 3 being 'too extreme' and 'too confusing', these ads are taking over your local channels. But I want to talk about a different issue on the ballot this year: Prop 2. Prop 2 would amend the Michigan State Constitution, to a llow nine days of early voting, r equire state-funded postage for absentee applications and ballots, c ontinue to allow registered voters without a state ID to sign an affidavit attesting to their identity, etc.  Now, my problem lies with that last part. Across the US, we see people get turned away, because they don't have explicit ID that enables them to vote. In most cases, the affidavit that they sign, is null, because of some small legal loophole, that prevents that ballot from being counted. In my opinion, that is malarkey. If you want to vote, you should have voter ID. However, it is the duty of the

Optional Blog Post on Violent Images

Image
Note: I chose to take on the newsroom perspective of the issue of violent images. I used this article as my reference: https://niemanreports.org/articles/how-newsrooms-handle-graphic-images-of-violence/ The following letter is from the perspective of a TV producer at CNN, writing to his boss, William Inkwell Dear Mr. Inkwell, There are new images out of Kharkiv. The war rages on and the atrocities have led to more innocent civilian deaths. I am writing to request your permission to air a one particular image. This image is of a dead child in the town square, after an early-morning attack. Now, I understand your sentiment towards the proliferation of violent images. But please, hear me out. This senseless war has gone on long enough. People are dying in droves. The only way that we can put an end to the war, is by stirring up enough public sentiment, to urge action. The people of the European nations surrounding Ukraine, need to be outraged at the atrocities being committed. Simply beca

Opinion: Race and expectations need to be reshuffled.

Image
I'm going to be perfectly honest here. I thought I understood race. Race was determined by the color of our skin, who we worship, what food we eat, and other superficial things. However, after reading a Biological Reality  in class, I've been forced to rethink my perspective on race. Race stretches far deeper than just these superficial characteristics, race is influenced by our socioeconomic conditions as well.  Think about it for a minute. Why is it that we see only a certain race of people consistently succeed? It is a common joke among members of the Asian and Indian communities, that students are either going to be doctors, lawyers, or engineers. But what enables these communities to hold such high standards? I mean, for the black community, we see a particular kind of story very often. Almost every Sunday, during either a Raiders game, or a Steelers game, we see a little bit about how their star running backs, Josh Jacobs and Najee Harris, overcame homelessness, to be m

MAUS Panel Close Read

Image
For the close read, I chose to examine the bottom part of page 117 and page 118. In these series of panel, Vladek is discussing Haskel, and the 'rat' that turned his family over to the Gestapo. I find it very interesting, that Spiegelman drew the contrast between mice and rats. He portrays the Jews as mice, but claims that the traitorous ones are rats, and that they are like vermin.     However, Vladek clearly has contrasting feelings about this. On one hand, he feels disgusted at Haskel, for having such 'friends'. This is evidenced by his comment at the end of an exchange with a Nazi: " such friends he had". On the other hand, he also feels a sense of gratitude to Haskel, for having been his family's Avenger, and saving grace in the ghetto. He sends him packages, even after the war, much to Artie's surprise. I suppose it paints a picture of gratitude, and Spiegelman argues that Vladek still feels gratitude to Haskel, despite Haskel's

Opinion: Picture books-The same as Comic Books?

Image
My earliest childhood memories are of story time, with my mother. I thoroughly enjoyed reading books such as It's the Bear! by Jez Alborough, or Library Lion, by Michelle Knudsen, or my personal favorite: Noddy goes to Toyland, by Enid Blyton. All of these books incorporated some level of wording. Let's analyze  2 crucial scenes from these books, and how words affect them. "Blueberry Pie... YUM YUM" Arguably my favorite scene from It's The Bear! , this scene is the climax where the main character, who has been spending the whole story seeing the bear, finally convinces his mom, that the bear is behind her. The 2 run away from their picnic, and the bear is left to eat the blueberry pie. Now, Scott McCloud contends that this is in the "Duo-Specific" style, wherein "both words and pictures convey essentially the same message". In this story, either element could stand alone, and the reader would understand that the blueberry pie is "YUM, YU
